"CAN SHE BAKE A CHERRY PIE? An United States Army helicopter full of soldiers is transported midflight from the middle of the Vietnam War (1968) to the barren plains of post apocalyptic Seattle by Reinhold Borsten, a wealthy collector of time's greatest warriors, and the same man responsible for bringing Hex to the future (Hex escaped from Borsten's collection in the first issue). The helicopter crashes shortly after materializing in the future. Hex sees the crash and pulls one of the soldiers from the wreckage to safety. Soldiers Marty Berkowitz, Hank Winslow, and Stanley Harris survive the crash. Berkowitz recognizes Hex from an Old West book and shows him the proper respect. Winslow, an African American, presumes Hex is prejudice because he is a southern boy and is ungrateful for Hex's assistance. Borsten spots Hex near the wreckage and sends his guards to retrieve one of the most valuable specimens in his collection. Shortly after introductions, Hex and the soldiers are attacked by futuristic assault vehicles resembling giant wheels. The soldiers' 20th century automatic weapons are useless against the assault vehicles's armor. Hex sees a weakness in the vehicles's defenses and disables them with a few precision shots from his 1875 Smith and Wesson revolver. Hex and the soldiers commandeer one of the vehicles and agree that their best chance of getting back to their time is to infiltrate Borsten's Needle (headquarters) and finding his time beam. Winslow grew up in the Seattle area, and he navigates the group to a top secret military base where his father once worked in hopes of finding something they can use to get back home. Once inside the abandoned base, the group is attacked by robotic guard dogs (as seen on the cover). Hex holds the mechanical beasts at bay, while the others escape. The dogs close in on Hex and at the last second he is saved by Stiletta (whom he met in the last issue). Unbeknownst to Hex and the soldiers, Stiletta was sent by Borsten to lure them back to the Needle. That night Hex and Stiletta share a kiss underneath the stars, while the guitar playing Winslow sings the traditional folksong Billy Boy off in the distance, which includes the lyric, Can she bake a cherry pie? (hence the title of the issue). Hex, Stiletta, and the soldiers repair a hovercraft found at the base and fly it to the Needle. They sneak inside and follow Stiletta's lead into a trap. Winslow and Berkowitz appear to be killed instantly by some sort of energy blast. Harris immediately accuses Stiletta of betraying them and notices something peculiar about her eye. Harris blasts Stiletta with his M-16, setting Hex into a rage. Harris explains to Hex that Stiletta was a robot and holds up one of her mechanical eyeballs as proof. Before Hex can even process the thought, Borsten's guards close in on them. Hex saves Harris's life again by pushing him out of the way of a laser blast, and then the two are separated. Hex is able to escape the Needle, but Winslow's fate is unknown (it is revealed later in the series that he is captured)."
